Why are we so drawn to get away, adventure, and explore?
We often get asked; "So what is it with this overlanding thing?" People think lots of different things about it. We just like the idea of it, it's a big waste of money, it's an excuse to get away from the family. The reality is, none of those things could be farther from the truth. It's actually the exact opposite of all of those.
1 - We just like the idea of it.
Nope. Actually, the idea of it kind of drives us crazy. It's the idea and subsequent planning that's the hard part. Where are we going? What's the route? What gear do we need? On and on. All of that advance work (which is 100% necessary and crucial) is all in anticipation of the trip itself. There is no better feeling than days, weeks, or months of planning coming together when the rubber hits the road.
2 - It's a big waste of money.
Again, nope. Although, wasting money is relative. I can think of many things I would consider to be wasting money that would genuinely bring someone else joy. The point is, yes, you have to spend some money in order to get out and explore safely. You don't need to break the bank, and what you actually need may be much much less than you think depending on your destination. I look at it as an investment. I have (slowly and over time) built a vehicle and acquired the gear that will allow me to go to most places. I am self sufficient, I know how to get away and back, and do it safely. Part of that is getting the equipment to help you along the way.
3 - It's an excuse to get away from the family.
Resounding no. Not even close to reality. Actually, we have both taken several steps and made decisions based on our families. We have kids, young kids - and the world is crazy. I mean really, crazy. It's easy in these times to get caught up. The e-mails, the calls, the texts... the damn cell phones and constant connectivity. We are on so much more now than ever before, and you are mistaken if you think your kids don't see that - and we are the example. We fundamentally believe that it is more important now than ever before to disconnect, re-connect with nature, and take that time to just do what's in our nature. That is what it's all about. It's why we do this, and why we make every effort to include our families on the journey.
So why? It's hard to explain really. The best thing I can say is to pack a bag and head somewhere remote. Go with whoever you like; family, friends, or maybe just go solo. Take a meal, maybe a drink, light a fire, watch the sun set and the stars light the sky. You'll get it.
